Honduras
Spring break this year I went to Honduras. I went there with 3 other pharmacy students from Drake and a variety of other medical student from DMU. There were about 50 of us total. We went with an organization called Global Brigades. We went to 2 different communities in Honduras and set up medical clinics. There were different stations that the patients went to that included: triage, consultation, dental, charla, and pharmacy. I spent time in each of the stations.
It was great to meet other medical students and work with them. It was a lot of fun to see how we can all work together and each bring a little different experience and knowledge to the health care team and how vital each person is. I think it's great that I'm started to realize this at the very beginning of my schooling. As a pharmacist I can be vital to the successful treatment of patients with my drug knowledge.
I really enjoyed getting to know the students both from Drake and DMU. I felt like I got a lot closer to them and they were all great people. They were great at including all of the Drake students in things. It was a great trip and I'm so glad that I decided to spend my spring break in Honduras.

Connecting with Friends
One of my goals for not being on social media during lent was to connect better with people. The week before spring break I thought I did that pretty well.
I started by skyping with my sister. We don't skype much, but when we do I really enjoy it. I heard all about her spring break trip to City Lights in St. Louis. I loved hearing about her trip and seeing the similarities between what she experienced and what I did. It really made me miss being in St. Louis and was just great to remember what I learned while there. Also to think about how much my faith has grown since then and also the areas where it hasn't changed much and where I could use some growth.
DG's internet is also slow at times so I had a little trouble pausing in awkward places and such. Somehow Carina gave me the idea to take some screen shots of her making strange faces. I told her I'd put them on the blog so I have to do it.
Later in the week I went over to Michelle's to chat about life. I hadn't really talked to her in what felt like forever. I had mostly been keeping up with her life via her blog. I miss living with her and our more frequent chats, but it was great to go over to her apartment and talk. I found out about the things she's been up to-the job interviews, etc. It was just great to talk.
I love talking with my friends and family and learning about what is going on with their lives.

Giving
*Sorry that I haven't posted in awhile, but with tests, spring break, etc. I didn't write anything, but I'm now back with a few new posts
During Intervarsity we've been doing challenges to strive to live a life more like Jesus. The first weeks challenge was about money. As college students it's easy to say that we're poor college students and can't give our money. If you look closer though, we have a lot of disposable income. I don't have monthly bills to pay or things "real" people have.
Therefore we were challenged to find 5 items of clothing to donate to someone else. These should be nicer pieces of clothing and things that we bought for ourselves. We were to bring them to current the following week.
The first thought that I had is that I wasn't sure if I had 5 things that I actually bought. I came to the realization that I still rely on my parents for a lot of my stuff. They normally buy me my clothes. I occasionally buy a shirt here or there for myself, but overall they buy most of it. After looking through my closet I found that I did buy more than I thought. I also have quite a bit of clothes that I don't wear and lots that I don't really need. I have been blessed with quite a lot. I chose 5 items some of them I wear quite a bit and have already missed a bit and some that I don't wear as often.
I think this was a great way to realize that what I have isn't really mine. It all belongs to God and He has blessed me with a lot. Therefore I should be willing to give these things to others.

Happy Birthday Carina
Happy Birthday to my wonderful little sister Carina who turns 19 today! You're a wonderful person and I'm so proud to call you my sister. I enjoy spending time with you and taking silly pictures and doing strange things. You always push me to be a little bit more fun and do random things that I wouldn't do. I think you're turning into an amazing person and it has been so fun to watch you mature so far. You are going to do great things at Creighton through the activities you're involved in and you'll do great things in the world after you graduate (or maybe before). I've also really enjoyed chatting with you lately on skype and things. Anyway you rock! Sorry I was in Honduras on your birthday so I couldn't call you!

What I do for fun
The other day Erin and I decided to try and do our hair up in a top bun. It was a lot of fun also taking pictures with our new up-dos. Also the perks of living in a sorority to have people to 1. do your hair like this and 2. many others in the house who get to see it.
I'm not sure exactly where we will wear this nice new hairstyle, but I'm sure we'll find a place. So please look below and enjoy the myspace-like mirror pics.

Also my hair was not wet/this greasy. Somehow with the flash/lighting/etc it looked this gross. |

Weekend at Home
I went home last weekend and had a very nice weekend. There wasn't a real reason why I went home. I did need to get stuff for my spring break trip to Honduras, but I also just wanted a relaxing weekend at home.
It worked out well that it was my dad's birthday so when I got home on Friday night I went out to dinner with my parents and their friends Kris and Jerry. It was also Jerry's birthday on Friday. It was an enjoyable meal and I was of course entertained by all of the adults. I didn't really want to be the 5th wheel, but it ended up not being so bad. I also went to Pakoda's (a steakhouse in town) for the first time and it was pretty good food.
On Saturday I spent the whole day doing homework and watching The Voice. I am now pretty much caught up on that, but sadly I probably won't be able to watch the rest of the season, because I'm usually too busy with homework for tv watching. I ended up being really productive on Saturday, which I needed to do. I also watched the ISU basketball game with my mom and dad. I hadn't watched any of the games this season and the men have been doing really well so it was exciting to watch the game and see them come out with a win.
Sunday I went to church, ate lunch, and then did some laundry. I also found the things I needed for spring break and then did a little more homework before heading back to Des Moines.
It was a great weekend and I was glad to spend it at home with my parents. It was a little strange to not have any siblings at home, but still good. I also enjoyed that my mom made me some treats to take back to school as well as the home-cooked meals that I got!

2 Weeks Without Social Media
So it's been 2 weeks now since I gave up facebook, twitter, and pinterest for lent. So far it's been going pretty good. At first it was very hard not to log into facebook. My usual routine is to go on the internet and then open up gmail and facebook. I spent lots of my time those first couple days typing in facebook then getting to the site and discovering I wasn't signed in and realizing that I gave it up. I've since mostly stopped doing that. Now as I'm typing facebook into the search bar I realize that I gave it up.
I've also realized that not that much happens on facebook that I'm really needing to check up on. Occasionally I find myself thinking that I could post something on someone's wall or something similar, but then I realize I got just text that person to tell them. Or I could call them or just tell them in person when I see them. Also my friend Traci wrote me a letter and so we've started a little snail mail correspondence. I love getting mail so I have enjoyed that so far and actually I'm finding out more about her life through that than I probably would have on facebook.
As far as the original purpose of giving up these types of media so I could spend more time in prayer, intentional listening to God, etc. I haven't been very good at that. Instead I've either spent more time working on my homework (which is actually a plus) or else looking up random articles online to read. For the remainder of lent I'm going to try really hard to only use my computer for homework related things or blogging. That way I can spend more time with God and also in real relationships with people.

Happy Birthday Dad!
Today is my dad's 47th birthday! I didn't really have any good pics on my computer of the 2 of us so that's why I did a wide variety of pictures. He usually brings his strange humor into many situations, is always willing to talk with me, and of course always willing to show me how to do things or explain how things work. He's one of the smartest people I know about such a variety of topics!

Bible Study
I am so thankful for the DG Bible study. I'm glad it's given me the opportunity to grow closer to some of my sisters in the house that I'm not sure I would have if we weren't all interested in growing in our relationship with God. This week past Sunday we had a great study. We started off watching a NOOMA video and then got talking about some great stuff.
I'm so grateful for these group of women that we can really talk about what's going on in our lives. How we're feeling, what struggles we've had recently, what's been exciting in our lives, etc. It's so nice to have a group of people that I can feel comfortable talking with and also be real, raw, and honest.
I think that our conversation was just that on Sunday. We all really shared what is going on in our lives and also realized that we are really all in similar places. I think a lot of times the Devil likes to make us think that we are the only ones going through this and no one else would understand. But when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable with each other then we can see that everyone deals with a lot of the same stuff. We're all college-aged women trying to figure out our paths in life, all busy being involved in a sorority, etc.
Again I'm just so thankful that:
1. I decided to join a sorority 4 years ago, I had no idea how much of an impact it would have on my college experience and the life-long friends I would make
2. That Beth Ann decided to start the Bible Study my sophomore year
3. To know that we've continued the study and also all of the great women that have been coming this year
I've truly loved how my sorority life and "Christian" life have blended together so well these past 2 years. I also can't wait to see what kinds of thing we'll talk about for the remainder of the semester and really hope that we can continue to be vulnerable with each other.
